  3. "VENTSYS" Company Management System  - Version 1.07  Jan 31, 1995

  6. For those using an earlier version of VENTSYS, there is an automatic upgrade
  7. capability built into VENTSYS. Simply unzip PROGRAMS.ZIP into your directory
  8. containing your data. By simply running VENTSYS all upgrades will be performed
  9. automatically and none of your existing data will be affected.
  10.  
  11. For those using "VENTSYS" for the first time:
  12.  
  13. "VENTSYS" requires the following minimum system configuration:
  14.  
  15.     -  DOS Version 3.3 or higher (earlier versions of DOS only allow 20
  16.        file handles to open at a time. This includes those file handles
  17.        used for the Screen, Keyboard, Printer, etc.),
  18.  
  19.     - 512K or more of memory,
  20.  
  21.     - a hard drive with at least 1.5 megabytes of free space,
  22.  
  23.     - a printer which supports the IBM character set (Graphics)
  24.     
  25.     
  26. In addition,  your CONFIG.SYS file must contain a line showing at least
  27. the following number of files:
  28.     
  29.     FILES=60
  30.     
  31. If  you  have a CONFIG.SYS file that does not contain this  line  (  or
  32. FILES are less than 60), you must edit your CONFIG.SYS file so it does.
  33. Use any ASCII text editor or your DOS editor to modify the file.  Refer
  34. to  your DOS manual if necessary.  Be sure to reboot your  computer  to
  35. implement the changes.
  36.     
  37. A note on the FILES=  in CONFIG.SYS.  DOS uses file handles to  control
  38. the  computer  and  run programs.  The default number of Files with  no
  39. FILES= statement is 20. Dos uses about 10 of these to control the basic
  40. operation of your computer (keyboard,  screen, floppies, parallel port,
  41. etc.).   VENTSYS needs about 50  file handles to run.  If you have any
  42. resident programs or are using a multi-tasking program, you may need to
  43. increase  the  number of file handles by increasing the number  in  the
  44. FILES=  line in your CONFIG.SYS. As each system is run differently,  we
  45. cannot determine the optimum number of Files.  If you get an Error such
  46. as : DBFNTX/1003    Open Error : ????????.NTX   or
  47.      DBFNTX/1006   Create Error: ????????.NTX
  48. then you MUST increase the number of Files in your CONFIG.SYS file.
  49.     
  50. "VENTSYS"  has been tested on 4.77  Mhz IBM XT's, 286 compatibles, 386
  51. compatibles  and 486  compatibles.  Obviously the response time on  the
  52. 486's  was  superb,  but even on the XT's the response time  was  good.
  53. Every effort has been made to ensure that "VENTSYS"  will run properly
  54. on any size machine with the minimum system requirements shown above.

  57. Files included:
  58.  
  59.         READ.ME      - This file.
  60.         PROGRAMS.ZIP - Contains the executable programs and documentation.
  61.         DEMODATA.ZIP - Contains a set of legitimate data for playing with.
  62.         EMPTYDAT.ZIP - Contains a set of empty databases ready for input of
  63.                        your records.

  65. It is highly recommended that you create a separate directory for "VENTSYS".
  66. Simply type at the DOS prompt:
  67.  
  68.         MD C:\VENTSYS
  69.         CD C:\VENTSYS
  70.  
  71. Copy the files above into the new directory.
  72.  
  73. You should unzip PROGRAMS.ZIP first.
  74.  
  75. You can print the documentation by typing at the DOS prompt:

  77.         COPY VENTSYS.DOC LPT1:
  78.  
  79. Next unzip DEMODATA.ZIP.
  80.  
  81. Start the system by typing SCOUTSYS. By using the Demo Data you can evaluate
  82. the system thoroughly. Do not be afraid to try anything. After all, it's only
  83. Demo Data. Actually, it is real data from a real Company, only the addresses and
  84. phone numbers have been changed to protect the innocent.

  86. If you choose to keep your data files in a separate directory from the
  87. programs then you must start the system by typing:
  88.  
  89.      VENTSYS Path   where Path is the Full Path to the Data Directory
  90.  
  91. If you decide to use "VENTSYS" for your own Company records, you should erase
  92. the demo data first. At the DOS prompt type:
  93.  
  94.         ERASE *.DBF
  95.         ERASE *.NTX
  96.  
  97. Unzip EMPTYDAT.ZIP and you will be ready to begin input of your own Company
  98. records. Print the Registration form to register your copy.

  101. Feel free to distribute "VENTSYS" to other Scouters. This is a fund raising
  102. project for our Company, distributed as Shareware, to minimize costs. Please be
  103. sure you include PROGRAMS.ZIP, EMPTYDAT.ZIP and READ.ME if you give a copy
  104. to others.
